Values and their supporting beliefs are lenses 

through which we see the world. 

가치들과 그것들을 지지하는 믿음들은 렌즈다

우리가 세상을 보는 것을 통한

The views that these lenses provide are often of what life ought to be like, not what it is.

관점들(이렌즈들이 제공하는)은 종종 인생이 어때야하는 지에 대한 것들이다

그것(인생)이 무엇인지가 아니라

For example, Americans value individualism so highly 

that they tend to see almost everyone 

as free and equal 

in pursuing the goal of success. 

예를 들어, 미국인들은 개인주의에 매우 높게 가치를 둔다

그들은 간주하는 경향이 있다

거의 모든 사람이 자유롭고 동등하다고

성공의 목표를 추구할 때

This value blinds them 

to the significance of the circumstances 

that keep people from achieving success. 

이가치는 그들을 장님으로 만든다

주변 환경의 중요성에 대해

사람들이 성공을 달성하는 것을 막는

The dire consequences of family poverty, parents’ low education, and dead-end jobs 

tend to drop from sight. 

심각한 결과들

가족의 가난, 부모의 낮은 교육수준, 미래가 없는 직업들은

시야에서 떨어지는(사라지는) 경향이 있다

Instead, Americans see the unsuccessful as not taking advantage of opportunities, or as having some inherent laziness or dull minds.

대신, 미국인들은 성공하지 못한 사람을 간주한다

기회에서 이익을 얻지 못한 것이나

어떤 내재적인(선천적인) 게으름 또는 둔한 머리를 가진 것으로

And they “know” they are right, 

because the mass media dangle before their eyes 

enticing stories of individuals 

who have succeeded despite the greatest of handicaps.

그리고 그들은 "안다" 그들이 옳다는 것을

왜냐하면 대중 매체가 그들의 눈 앞에 흔들고 있기 때문이다

개인들의 매혹적인 이야기들을
